Youthful Entrepreneurs Transform Lives Through Dragon Fruit Cultivation

In various districts across the country, a growing number of young individuals are reshaping their destinies by immersing themselves in the agricultural sector, particularly in the cultivation of the lucrative dragon fruit, thereby achieving self-reliance.

Mizanur Rahman Mithu, a youth from Sariakandi upazila in Bogura, stands as a shining example of success in dragon fruit cultivation. Cultivating dragons on eight bighas of land, Mithu achieved sales of approximately Tk 25 lakh last year, elevating him to the status of a local inspiration for other youths. Many are now seeking practical training from Mithu, harboring dreams of altering their own destinies.

Abdul Halim, the agriculture officer of Sariakandi upazila, remarked that an increasing number of individuals, including youths, are expressing interest in dragon fruit cultivation. The upazila office is extending comprehensive support to these aspiring entrepreneurs. Notably, the cultivation of dragon fruit has played a pivotal role in reducing unemployment in the upazila, with new agricultural entrepreneurs emerging regularly.

Mithu, expressing contentment with his dragon fruit farm’s success and substantial earnings, revealed that many youths in his area have drawn inspiration from his achievements.

Champa Begum, residing in Baniali village under Jashore sadar upazila, embarked on dragon fruit cultivation to support her family, particularly her son who requires regular medical attention. Overcoming the initial shock of the fruit’s high market price, Champa successfully cultivated dragon fruits on her 16 decimals of land, earning over Tk 2.5 lakh last year. This venture has not only changed her life but also enabled her to provide for her son independently.

Similarly, Mahfuz Talukder, a Dhaka University student majoring in chemistry, generated Tk 2 lakh this year through dragon fruit cultivation on his 33 decimals of land in Sakhipur upazila, Tangail. His goal is to offer people chemical and formalin-free fruits, and with promising yields, he anticipates even greater earnings in the coming years.

These success stories underscore the transformative impact of dragon fruit cultivation, empowering youths to forge prosperous and self-sufficient futures in the agricultural landscape.
