Indian Officials’ Absence Delays Key Power Projects in Bangladesh

Senior officials from Indian companies involved in essential power transmission projects tied to the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) in Bangladesh have not yet returned, sparking concerns over project delays.

While some staff from KEC International and Transrail Lighting Limited have resumed work, key personnel from Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and other firms remain absent. An official from Power Grid Bangladesh PLC noted that returning employees are mainly local temporary workers and mid-level officials, with no senior staff back yet.

However, Indian staff from L&T are expected to return by September 24, according to another official. The departure of Indian staff came after the fall of the Awami League government in August, leading to a halt in various transmission projects crucial for evacuating electricity from the RNPP, set to begin operations in December.

Indian companies are involved in 17 transmission projects across Bangladesh, with L&T, KEC, and Transrail playing significant roles. The RNPP transmission infrastructure, set for completion by early 2025, includes 400kV and 230kV transmission lines critical for synchronization with the national grid.

The transmission project, costing Tk 10,981 crore, is largely financed by Exim Bank, with additional contributions from the Bangladesh government and Power Grid Bangladesh.

The project consists of multiple packages, including extensive transmission lines, river crossings, bay extensions, and system upgrades to enhance grid reliability and frequency control
